Building a Vacation Home in Exuma Bahamas

Do you watch those international house hunting shows on HGTV? Bahamas Life? Caribbean Life? I did and thought to myself if these people can do it so can I. Just a few short years later our family has a beach house in the Bahamas.

If you saw our episode on Caribbean Life then you know our story. The kids were moving on to their college years and it was time to plan ahead for a new phase of family vacations with our adult children.

The thought of buying vacant beachfront property and building a dream home in a foreign country is both exciting and terrifying. But it was easier than you might think. How long did it take? How much did it cost?

We purchased the land in December 2015 and broke ground September 2017. Just 12 months later we moved in. Our Bahamian builder and his crew were wonderful. We received weekly updates and photos of the constructions site from our project manager. This allowed us to make a few teaks along the way.

We met in Florida with a kitchen designer who exports to the Bahamas. Almost all of our construction materials came from Florida. A cargo boat delivers to Exuma every week.

We shipped all of our furniture and household goods to the island as there are no furniture stores in Exuma. Customs was a breeze and everything arrived in a container and nothing got broken!

There were a few set backs along the way but overall it was an amazing experience. We celebrated with a crew party for our Bahamian team. We now have a place to spend quality time with our friends and family for years to come. You can too. Stay at Seaglass Beach House!
